Importance of Upvas in Sanatan Dharma | Ekadashi Vrat
Fasting has great importance in our Sanatan Dharma. Upvas means fasting and chanting God’s name and devoting to God. In our Sanatan Dharma, another name for Upvas is Vrat, under which we worship God and also keep fasting.
Some people think that fasting or Upvaas are the same but it is not so. Fasting is a basic process in which we do not eat food but remain on diet which even doctors recommend to keep our health good. Fasting can be done by anyone who does not have good health and also by those who want to maintain good health.
On the other hand, Upvaas is done only for the devotional purpose in which we do fasting but along with it we also do bhajan or chanting of God or it is done by pure surrender to God. There are many ways of Upvaas, like many people fast by not eating or drinking anything, while some people fast by eating only fruits.
It is very important to keep fast in Sanatan Dharma. By doing this, your body will be healthy and your mind will also be blessed or God principle will develop in your intellect.
As we all know that our body is made up of five elements. And we take all the food to strengthen this body. Similarly, the life force of the soul also resides in our body, to strengthen this soul we do Upvas, worship God and meditate.
No matter how much you fast, no matter how healthy you make the body, it will not benefit it , but after that, the body has to be nourished by combining these five elements. But the soul which is the source of power of the body is an eternal force which will never be destroyed. So the main thing here is that you can satisfy your soul more than your body and get peace by doing things just like meditation and Upvaas.
There are many festivals in Sanatan Dharma and the main dates on which you can do Upvaas like Navratri, Shivratri, Janmashtami, Ekadashi Titihi etc.
