Hindu texts describe Kamdhenu as the daughter of the creator Daksha, the consort of the teacher Kashyapa, and the possession of the ancient sages Jamadagni or Vasishta. She is said to have emerged from “Amrit manthan,” the churning of the cosmic ocean.
The four daughters of Kamadhenu/Surabhi are known as the Dikpalis, or the guardians of the cow goddesses: Dhenu guards the North, Harhsika the South, Sauabhi the East, and Subhadra the West. Her four legs stand in for the four Vedas, and she represents the Pancha maha-bhoota, or the Five Elements. Her horns represent the Divine Trinity, with Shiva at the base, Vishnu in the center, and Brahma at the apex.
The Gods of the Sun and Moon, Agni and Vayu, live in her eyes and on her shoulders, respectively. The Divine Cow is seen to be in one of Dattatreya’s hands. The thousand-armed Haihaya king Kartavirya Arjuna is said to have badly damaged Jamadagni’s ashram and taken Madhenu’s calf, according to the Mahabharata. The monarch was killed by Parashurama, the son of Jamadagni, who had gone to recover the calf.
Jamadagni was subsequently slain by the king’s sons. Enraged beyond measure and driven by a desire for vengeance, Parashurama decimated the Kshatriya (warrior) race twenty-one times. Not long after Parashurama returned Kamadhenu and her daughter to his father, his father was raised from the dead.
She is the Divine Consort of Brahma and is also shown as one of the Shaktis. A ceremoniously brought in cow is worshipped, fed, and often left till it urinates or excretes its excrement during Griha-Pravesh. Traditionally, cow’s milk was used to both prevent and cure a variety of illnesses.
